সংস্কৃত ‘পরিচিতি’ (পরি- ‘চারদিকে/সম্পূর্ণভাবে’ + চিত্ ‘জানা/চেনা’) থেকে বাংলায় ব্যবহৃত; অর্থে পরিচয়, পরিচয়দান, ও পরিচয়-সংক্রান্ত তথ্যের ধারণা বিকশিত হয়েছে

পরিচিতি বলতে কারও সঙ্গে আগে থেকে জানাশোনা বা আলাপ-পরিচয়ের অবস্থা, কাউকে পরিচয় করিয়ে দেওয়ার প্রক্রিয়া, কিংবা পরিচয় সংক্রান্ত লিখিত তথ্য/নথি (যেমন জীবনবৃত্তান্ত, পরিচয়পত্র) বোঝায়
