আরবি ‘الكحل’ (আল-কুহল) শব্দ থেকে ইউরোপীয় ভাষার মাধ্যমে ‘অ্যালকোহল’ শব্দের বিস্তার; পরবর্তীতে অর্থের প্রসার হয়ে নেশাজাতীয় স্পিরিট এবং রসায়নের ‘অ্যালকোহল’ শ্রেণি বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়
