সংস্কৃত ‘অস্পৃশ্য’ (অ- + স্পৃশ্ ‘স্পর্শ করা’) অর্থাৎ ‘যাকে স্পর্শ করা যায় না’—বাংলায় অর্থবিস্তারে ‘অস্পর্শ্য’ রূপে প্রচলিত

From Sanskrit ‘अस्पृश्य’ (a- ‘not’ + √स्पृश् ‘to touch’), meaning ‘not touchable’; in Bengali it became established as ‘অস্পর্শ্য’ with extended social meanings

Definition

যা বা যাকে ছোঁয়া যায় না, অথবা ধর্মীয়-সামাজিক বিধিনিষেধে যাকে ‘ছোঁয়াচে’ বলা হয় না—বিশেষত বর্ণব্যবস্থায় নিম্ন বলে গণ্য মানুষকে বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত; আরও অর্থে অত্যন্ত পবিত্র/অলঙ্ঘনীয় বা নাগালের বাইরে বোঝাতেও ব্যবহৃত হয়
