ফারসি ‘অফিম’ (অর্থ: পোস্তের রসজাত মাদক) শব্দ থেকে বাংলায় গৃহীত; ফারসি শব্দটি আরবি ‘أفيون’ (afiyūn) থেকে, যার উৎস গ্রিক ‘ὄπιον’ (opion, অর্থ: পোস্তের রস)
Borrowed into Bengali from Persian ‘afīm’ (opium), via Arabic ‘أفيون’ (afiyūn), ultimately from Greek ‘ὄπιον’ (opion, “poppy juice”)

পোস্ত গাছের কাঁচা ফলের খোসা চিরে যে দুধের মতো রস বের হয়, তা শুকিয়ে যে নেশাজাতীয় মাদক তৈরি হয় তাকে ‘অফিম’ বলে; এতে মরফিনসহ বিভিন্ন অ্যালকালয়েড থাকে এবং ব্যথানাশক ও নেশাজাতীয় প্রভাব ফেলে
