সংস্কৃত ‘অধঃ’ (নীচে) + ‘লোক’ (জগত/জনপদ) থেকে গঠিত; অর্থ ‘নীচের জগৎ’, পরে পুরাণগত পাতাল/নরক এবং রূপকে ‘অপরাধজগৎ’ অর্থে ব্যবহৃত
