‘অচল’ = ‘চল’ (চলা/গতি) শব্দের সঙ্গে নঞর্থক উপসর্গ ‘অ-’ যোগে গঠিত; অর্থ ‘যা চলে না/চলতে পারে না’। পরে ‘হওয়া’ ক্রিয়ার সঙ্গে যুক্ত হয়ে অবস্থা-পরিবর্তনের অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হয়
