সংস্কৃত ধাতু ‘গৃহ্/গ্রহ্’ (ধরা, গ্রহণ করা) থেকে ‘নিগৃহীত’—‘নি-’ উপসর্গ যুক্ত হয়ে অর্থ দাঁড়ায় দমন/সংযত/বশীভূত করা; বাংলা ব্যবহারে ‘নিপীড়িত/দমিত’ অর্থে প্রচলিত।
From the Sanskrit root ‘gṛh/ grah’ (“to seize, take”), forming ‘nigṛhīta’ with the prefix ‘ni-’, conveying the sense of restraining/subduing; in Bengali it is commonly used to mean ‘oppressed/suppressed/victimized.’
Definition
যাকে শক্তি, কর্তৃত্ব বা শাস্তির দ্বারা দমন/বশীভূত করা হয়েছে; কিংবা নির্যাতিত বা অপমানিত অবস্থায় নামিয়ে আনা হয়েছে—সে ‘নিগৃহীত’।
‘নিগৃহীত’ refers to someone/something that has been subdued, suppressed, or brought under control through force/authority/punishment; also used for being victimized, persecuted, or humiliated.
