সংস্কৃত ‘হৃদ্/হৃদয়’ (হৃদয়) ও ‘পিণ্ড’ (গুটি/দেহখণ্ড) থেকে গঠিত যৌগিক শব্দ; অর্থাৎ ‘হৃদয়ের পিণ্ড/দেহখণ্ড’, যা শারীরবৃত্তীয় অর্থে হৃদয় (অঙ্গ) বোঝাতে স্থির হয়েছে
