From the combination of week + end; first widely recorded in late 19th–early 20th century English as the idea of a two-day break from work became common.

Definition
Weekend refers to the two days at the end of the week (usually Saturday and Sunday) when most people do not work or go to school and use the time for rest, family, or leisure.
