From union + -ism; built on the sense of “union” as an organized association (especially of workers) and later used for specific political loyalties (e.g., the U.S. Union; the United Kingdom).
‘union’ + ‘-ism’ से निर्मित; ‘union’ के ‘संगठित संघ/संस्था’ (विशेषकर श्रमिक संघ) वाले अर्थ पर आधारित, और बाद में कुछ विशिष्ट राजनीतिक निष्ठाओं/समर्थन के लिए भी प्रयुक्त (जैसे अमेरिकी ‘यूनियन’, या यूनाइटेड किंगडम का संघ)।
Definition
Unionism is the belief or movement that supports forming or strengthening unions—most commonly workers’ trade unions to protect rights and improve wages and conditions; in some historical and political contexts it also means supporting the Union side in the American Civil War, or supporting the continued union of the United Kingdom (especially regarding Northern Ireland).
