Turnout is a noun with several senses: it can mean the number of people who show up or take part (especially voter participation), a roadside area where vehicles can pull over (a lay-by), a railway track switch (set of points), or more generally the act/result of turning out (appearing); it can also refer to a strike, a striker, a fine display of carriage/horses, or the net yield produced.
