From Middle English scholar, from Old French escholier, from Medieval Latin scholaris (“student”), from Latin schola (“school”), ultimately from Greek skholē (“leisure; school”).

Definition

A scholar is (1) a student, especially one supported by a scholarship, and (2) a person who has deep knowledge and does serious study or research in a particular subject.
