From 18th-century English, from the noun/verb rifle in the sense of ‘to plunder, rummage’; the firearm sense is linked to rifling (spiral grooves) in the barrel. Ultimately related to earlier Germanic forms meaning ‘to rob/plunder’.
18वीं शताब्दी की अंग्रेज़ी से; ‘लूटना/खंगालना’ वाले अर्थ के rifle (संज्ञा/क्रिया) से। बंदूक वाला अर्थ नाल के अंदर बने सर्पिल खाँचों (rifling) से जुड़ा है। मूल रूप से यह जर्मनिक भाषाओं के उन पुराने रूपों से संबंधित माना जाता है जिनका अर्थ ‘लूटना/छीनना’ था।

राइफल कंधे से चलाने वाली लंबी नाल की बंदूक होती है जिसकी नाल के अंदर सर्पिल खांचे (rifling) होते हैं, जो गोली को घुमाकर निशाने की सटीकता बढ़ाते हैं; क्रिया के रूप में इसका अर्थ किसी चीज़ में जल्दी या बेतरतीब ढंग से टटोलकर/खंगालकर खोज करना भी होता है।
