From Middle English riddel ("sieve") and later "riddle" meaning "to make many holes"; the 'puzzle' sense developed by association with something hard to 'sort out'.
मध्य अंग्रेज़ी riddel ("चलनी") से; बाद में "riddle" का अर्थ "कई छेद करना" भी हुआ (जैसे ‘riddled with holes’); ‘पहेली’ वाला अर्थ समय के साथ किसी बात को ‘छाँटकर/सुलझाकर’ समझने की कल्पना से विकसित हुआ।

A riddle is a puzzle—often a question or short poem—that uses clever wording, clues, or double meanings so that the listener must guess the answer; it can also mean any mysterious or perplexing thing.
रिडल (पहेली) एक प्रकार की पहेली/बूझने वाला प्रश्न या छोटा पद्य होता है जिसमें चतुर शब्द-चयन, संकेत या दोहरे अर्थ होते हैं ताकि सुनने वाला उत्तर का अनुमान लगाए; यह किसी भी रहस्यमय या उलझाने वाली बात/स्थिति के लिए भी कहा जाता है।
