From Latin quadrangulum ‘four-cornered’, from quadri- ‘four’ + angulus ‘angle’; later used for a four-sided court in colleges.

A quadrangle is (1) a geometric shape with four sides and four angles (a four-sided polygon), and (2) an open courtyard or square space surrounded by buildings, especially in a school, college, or monastery.
