Pyelonephrosis is a suppurative infection of the kidney in which the renal collecting system (renal pelvis and calyces) becomes filled with pus, most often caused by urinary obstruction (e.g., stones, strictures) leading to infected hydronephrosis; it is a medical emergency requiring urgent drainage and antibiotics.
