Definition
In Latin, punctum means a 'point' or 'puncture'; in English it is used in scholarly contexts for (1) a dot/point in writing or criticism, and (2) in Roland Barthes’s theory of photography, the small detail in an image that unexpectedly 'wounds' or intensely affects the viewer.
