Origin & History
From pump (a device operated by pumping) + action (the operating mechanism of a firearm); the compound became common in late 19th–early 20th century with slide-operated repeating firearms.
‘पंप’ (दबाव/पंप करने से चलने वाला उपकरण) + ‘एक्शन’ (आग्नेयास्त्र का संचालन तंत्र) से बना संयुक्त शब्द; स्लाइड से चलने वाले रिपीटिंग हथियारों के प्रचलन के साथ यह पद 19वीं सदी के अंत–20वीं सदी की शुरुआत में आम हुआ।
Definition
Describing a device—most commonly a shotgun—whose action is worked by moving a sliding fore-end (the “pump”) backward and forward to eject and chamber a round.
ऐसा उपकरण (अक्सर शॉटगन) जिसका यांत्रिक ‘एक्शन’ आगे के स्लाइडिंग हिस्से/फोर-एंड (पंप) को आगे-पीछे चलाकर संचालित किया जाता है, जिससे खाली खोखा निकलता है और नई गोली/कारतूस चैम्बर में आती है।
