Origin & History
From Latin protestari ‘to declare publicly, protest’, via German Protestant (originally used of princes and cities that ‘protested’ a decision at the Diet of Speyer in 1529); later applied to churches formed in the Reformation.

Definition
Protestant refers to branches of Western Christianity that separated from the Roman Catholic Church during the Reformation in the 16th century, and to a person who follows one of these churches (e.g., Lutheran, Calvinist/Reformed, Anglican, Baptist, Methodist).
प्रोटेस्टेंट उन पश्चिमी ईसाई परंपराओं/समुदायों को कहते हैं जो 16वीं शताब्दी के ‘रिफ़ॉर्मेशन’ (धार्मिक सुधार आंदोलन) के दौरान रोमन कैथोलिक चर्च से अलग हुए, और उस व्यक्ति को भी जो ऐसे किसी चर्च (जैसे लूथरन, कैल्विनवादी/रीफ़ॉर्म्ड, एंग्लिकन, बैपटिस्ट, मेथोडिस्ट) का अनुयायी हो।
