From Medieval Latin pr(a)ecentor (“one who sings first/leader of singing”), from Latin prae- (“before”) + cantor (“singer”).

Definition
A precentor is the appointed leader of congregational singing and/or liturgical responses, often responsible for directing the choir or setting the pitch and order of chants during worship services (commonly in cathedrals and churches).
