Origin & History
From French porcelaine, from Italian porcellana (“cowrie shell”), later used for the glossy, shell-like ceramic; ultimately from Latin porcellus (“little pig”) referring to the shell’s shape.

Porcelain is a high-quality ceramic—hard, smooth, usually white and slightly translucent—commonly used for fine tableware, decorative pieces, tiles, and sanitary ware (e.g., toilets and basins).
