From Middle English pol(le) meaning 'head' (also 'person'), later used for 'counting heads' and then 'counting votes'; modern senses developed in the 17th–19th centuries.
यह शब्द मध्य अंग्रेज़ी pol(le) से आया है जिसका अर्थ 'सिर' (और कभी-कभी 'व्यक्ति') था; आगे चलकर 'लोगों की गिनती' और फिर 'मतों की गिनती' के अर्थ में विकसित हुआ; आधुनिक अर्थ 17वीं–19वीं शताब्दियों में स्थिर हुए।
Definition
Poll refers mainly to (1) an official voting process or the total votes counted in an election, and (2) a survey that measures people’s opinions; as a verb it means to record votes or to question people to gather opinions.
