Definition
Pleuritis is inflammation of the pleura, the thin tissues that line the chest cavity and cover the lungs; it commonly causes pleuritic (sharp) chest pain that worsens with deep breaths, coughing, or sneezing, and may occur with infections, autoimmune disease, pulmonary embolism, or other lung conditions.
