Origin & History
From Spanish/anthropological usage based on a Piman/O'odham expression interpreted as meaning “I don’t know” (often cited as pi ’añi mac or similar), later applied as an exonym for the people and their language; the term is now frequently replaced by endonyms.

Definition
Piman is a historical ethnolinguistic term for Indigenous groups speaking Piman languages (especially the people now commonly called the Tohono O'odham), and for the language family/varieties; in modern usage it is often replaced by the groups’ preferred names and may be considered dated or offensive.
