From German Philister (university slang for a non-student outsider), ultimately from Biblical 'Philistines', later used in English for a person seen as hostile to culture and the arts.

Definition
A philistine is someone seen as lacking appreciation for art, literature, ideas, or refined culture, often valuing only practical or material concerns; it is usually used as a criticism.
'फिलिस्टाइन' ऐसे व्यक्ति को कहा जाता है जिसे कला, साहित्य, विचारों या सुसंस्कृत संस्कृति की समझ/कद्र नहीं होती और जो प्रायः केवल व्यावहारिक या भौतिक बातों को ही महत्व देता है; यह शब्द आम तौर पर आलोचनात्मक अर्थ में用 होता है।
