From Latin phalanx, from Greek phálanx (φάλαγξ) meaning “log, roller; battle line/formation”; later extended to anatomy for finger/toe bones.
लैटिन phalanx से, जो यूनानी phálanx (φάλαγξ) से आया है, जिसका अर्थ “लठ्ठा/रोलर; युद्ध-पंक्ति/रचना” था; बाद में अर्थ-विस्तार होकर शरीर-विज्ञान में उंगली/पैर की हड्डियों के लिए भी प्रयोग होने लगा।
Definition
A phalanx is (1) a famous ancient Greek and Macedonian battle formation of tightly packed soldiers with overlapping shields and long spears; by extension, (2) any large, close-knit group moving or acting together; and in anatomy, (3) a phalanx can mean a finger/toe bone (more commonly: phalanx singular, phalanges plural).
फालैंक्स का अर्थ (1) प्राचीन यूनानी और मकदूनियाई सेना की वह घनी युद्ध-रचना है जिसमें सैनिक ढालें जोड़कर और लंबे भाले लेकर पास-पास खड़े होते थे; विस्तार से (2) किसी भी बड़े, सघन और एकजुट समूह के लिए भी प्रयोग होता है; तथा शरीर-विज्ञान में (3) यह उंगली या पैर की उंगली की हड्डी के लिए भी आता है (आम तौर पर: एकवचन phalanx, बहुवचन phalanges)।
