From Algonquian (Powhatan) ‘pessamin’ meaning ‘a dry fruit’, adopted into American English in the 17th century; later applied to the fruit of Diospyros species.

Definition
Persimmon is a round to oval, orange to reddish fruit that becomes very sweet when fully ripe; some varieties are astringent until soft, while others can be eaten firm. It is eaten fresh, dried, or used in desserts and preserves, and the word can also refer to the persimmon tree.
