यह शब्द यूनानी periphrasis (“चारों ओर से/घुमा-फिराकर कहना”) से आया है, जो peri- (“आसपास/चारों ओर”) + phrasis (“कथन/अभिव्यक्ति”) से बना है; बाद में लैटिन के माध्यम से अंग्रेज़ी में आया और अलंकारिक तथा व्याकरणिक अर्थों में प्रचलित हुआ।

Periphrasis is a rhetorical and grammatical technique in which a speaker or writer expresses something indirectly or with a longer, more elaborate phrase instead of using a simple, direct word or construction (e.g., saying “the author of Hamlet” instead of “Shakespeare”). It can be used for emphasis, politeness, avoidance, or stylistic effect, but may also sound wordy.
परिफ्रासिस (Periphrasis) एक अलंकारिक और व्याकरणिक तकनीक है जिसमें वक्ता/लेखक किसी बात को सीधे, सरल शब्दों में कहने के बजाय घुमावदार या अधिक शब्दों वाले वाक्यांश से व्यक्त करता है (जैसे “Shakespeare” की जगह “Hamlet का लेखक”). यह ज़ोर देने, शिष्टता, टालने/बचने, या शैलीगत प्रभाव के लिए उपयोग हो सकता है, लेकिन कभी-कभी अनावश्यक रूप से शब्दाडंबरपूर्ण भी लग सकता है।
