From Middle English perch, from Old French perche (“pole; perch”), ultimately from Latin pertica (“rod, pole”). The fish sense comes from French perche and Latin perca.

“Perches” can mean the plural of “perch” (a place a bird sits/roosts, or a high/advantageous position), it can refer to perches as fish (members of the perch family), and it is also used for old units of measurement; as a verb, it means ‘sits/rests on a high place’ or ‘places something so it sits there’.
