यूनानी penta- ‘पाँच’ + chordē ‘तार/स्ट्रिंग’ से; यह शब्द लैटिनीकरण/नव-शास्त्रीय संगीत-परिभाषाओं के माध्यम से अंग्रेज़ी में आया।

A pentachord is a group of five successive musical notes (a five-note segment of a scale), often discussed in music theory and modal systems; historically, the term can also refer to an ancient Greek lyre with five strings.
