Pension

/ˈpɛnʃ(ə)n/

Origin & History

From Middle French pension, from Latin pensionem (“a payment”), from pendere (“to pay/weight out”).

Definition

A pension is usually a fixed, regular amount paid by an employer or the government to support a person after they retire (or sometimes to dependents after death). In some European usage, a pension can also mean a boarding house or small hotel offering lodging and sometimes meals.
