From French patentee (the person to whom something is granted), from patent/patenté, based on Latin patens (“open”), via the idea of open letters (letters patent).

Definition
A patentee is the individual, company, or organization that has been granted a patent and therefore has the legal right to exclude others from making, using, selling, or importing the patented invention for the term of the patent.
