From French parenteral, formed from para- (“beside, outside”) + enteral (from Greek enteron “intestine”), meaning ‘outside the intestines’.

Parenteral refers to giving a drug, fluid, or nutrition by a route that does not go through the stomach or intestines—most commonly by injection into a vein, muscle, or under the skin.
