From New Latin paracentesis, from Greek parakéntēsis “piercing at the side,” from para- “beside” + kentēsis “puncturing” (from kentein “to prick”).

Definition
Paracentesis is a clinical procedure where a needle/catheter is introduced into a body cavity—most commonly the peritoneal (abdominal) cavity—to drain excess fluid (ascites) or to collect a sample for laboratory testing; it can be diagnostic or therapeutic.
