PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) is an organic compound once commonly used as a UVB-absorbing ingredient in sunscreens; it can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some people, so its use has declined. It is also known in biochemistry as a compound involved in bacterial folate (vitamin B9) synthesis.
