Definition
Opium is a sticky, brown substance collected from the dried sap (latex) of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). It contains natural chemicals (alkaloids) such as morphine and codeine, which can reduce pain and cause sleepiness; because it is highly addictive and can cause overdose, its non-medical use is illegal and dangerous.
अफीम अफीम के पौधे (Papaver somniferum) के सूखे रस (लेटेक्स) से प्राप्त एक चिपचिपा भूरा पदार्थ है। इसमें मॉर्फीन और कोडीन जैसे प्राकृतिक रसायन (एल्कलॉइड) होते हैं जो दर्द कम कर सकते हैं और उनींदापन ला सकते हैं; यह अत्यधिक लत लगाने वाली है और ओवरडोज़ का कारण बन सकती है, इसलिए गैर-चिकित्सीय उपयोग अवैध और खतरनाक है।
