From on + line, originally referring to being “on the line” of a computer/telephone network; widely used from the late 20th century with the growth of computer networks and the Internet.

“Online” describes something connected to a network (usually the Internet), available via the Internet, or a system that is active/operational; it can also be used as a verb meaning to bring a system into active service.
