From Greek ō mega, literally “great o,” used to distinguish the long ‘o’ sound from omicron (“small o”).

Omega is the 24th and last letter of the Greek alphabet, often used symbolically to mean “the end,” “the final limit,” or “the last stage.” It is also used in science and mathematics (e.g., the ohm symbol Ω for electrical resistance, and omega notation in math).
