From nautical English: off + -ing, originally referring to the sea “off” the shore; later extended metaphorically to mean something approaching or likely to occur.
समुद्री अंग्रेज़ी से: off + -ing; मूलतः तट के “बाहर/दूर” समुद्र के भाग के लिए, बाद में रूपक रूप से ‘निकट भविष्य में आने वाली/संभावित’ बात के अर्थ में विस्तार हुआ।
Definition
In modern use, especially in the phrase “in the offing,” it means something expected or about to happen in the foreseeable future; in nautical use it refers to the part of the sea visible from land in the distance, beyond the nearshore and anchorage.
आधुनिक प्रयोग में, खासकर “in the offing” वाक्यांश में, इसका अर्थ है कोई ऐसी बात/घटना जो निकट भविष्य में होने की संभावना हो; नौवहन (समुद्री) संदर्भ में यह तट से दूर दिखाई देने वाला समुद्र का वह भाग है जो किनारे के पास और लंगर-स्थल (anchorage) से आगे होता है।
