Definition
Nopal is the Spanish name for the prickly pear cactus (genus Opuntia), especially its flat, paddle-like pads that are eaten as a vegetable (often called nopales). It is common in Mexican cuisine and can be grilled, sautéed, or added to salads; it has a slightly tart, green flavor and a mucilaginous (slippery) texture when cooked.
