From Ancient Greek Nīkē (Νίκη) meaning “victory”; later adopted as the name of the American sportswear company founded in 1964 (renamed Nike, Inc. in 1971).

Nike refers to the ancient Greek personification/goddess of victory, and in modern usage it is also the name of a major American company known for athletic shoes, apparel, and sports equipment.
