Origin & History
From night + hawk; the bird was named by comparison with hawks because of its swift, hawk-like flight while hunting at dusk and night. The bird sense is recorded in English from the 17th century.
night + hawk से बना शब्द; इस पक्षी को ‘हॉक’ जैसा नाम इसके तेज़, बाज़ जैसी उड़ान के कारण मिला, क्योंकि यह सांझ और रात में उड़कर शिकार करता है। पक्षी वाला अर्थ अंग्रेज़ी में 17वीं शताब्दी से मिलता है।
Definition
Nighthawk refers mainly to a nocturnal insect-eating bird (a type of nightjar; in the New World especially the genus Chordeiles, such as the Common Nighthawk). Figuratively, it can also mean a person who habitually stays up late and is active at night.
Nighthawk मुख्यतः रात में सक्रिय, कीड़े खाने वाले पक्षी के लिए कहा जाता है (नाइटजार का एक प्रकार; अमेरिका में विशेषकर Chordeiles वंश, जैसे ‘कॉमन नाइटहॉक’)। लाक्षणिक रूप से इसका अर्थ वह व्यक्ति भी हो सकता है जो आदतन देर रात तक जागता और रात में सक्रिय रहता है।
