यह आधुनिक अंग्रेज़ी का संयुक्त शब्द है—“name” + “calling”; 20वीं शताब्दी के मध्य से इसका प्रयोग लोगों को अपमानजनक नामों से पुकारकर बेइज़्ज़त करने की प्रवृत्ति/प्रथा के अर्थ में होने लगा।

Name-calling is the use of rude, mocking, or abusive names to hurt, shame, or provoke someone; it is a form of verbal aggression and is common in bullying, arguments, and discrimination.
नाम-बुलाना (नेम-कॉलिंग) का मतलब किसी को चोट पहुँचाने, शर्मिंदा करने या भड़काने के लिए अपमानजनक/ताने भरे/गाली-गलौज वाले नामों से पुकारना है; यह मौखिक आक्रामकता का एक रूप है और अक्सर बदमाशी, झगड़ों तथा भेदभाव में दिखता है।
