Mumble

/ˈmʌmbəl/

Origin & History

Probably imitative (echoic) in origin; recorded from Late Middle English, referring to speaking indistinctly.

Definition

To speak in a low voice so that words are hard to understand, often because the speaker does not open the mouth clearly; also, a soft unclear sound or utterance (and sometimes gentle chewing with closed lips).
