लैटिन mortarium (अर्थ: ओखली/कटोरा, हौदी; बाद में निर्माण का गारा) से, जो पुरानी फ़्रेंच mortier के माध्यम से अंग्रेज़ी में आया; सैन्य अर्थ बाद में ओखली जैसी आकृति के अनुरूप उपमा से विकसित हुआ।
Definition
Mortar commonly means (1) the paste-like mixture used to bond bricks or stones in construction, (2) a sturdy bowl in which substances are ground with a pestle, and (3) a military weapon that launches shells at high angles.
Mortar का सामान्य अर्थ है (1) निर्माण में ईंटों/पत्थरों को जोड़ने के लिए इस्तेमाल होने वाला सीमेंट, रेत और पानी आदि का गाढ़ा मिश्रण, (2) वह मज़बूत कटोरा/ओखली जिसमें मूसल से चीज़ें पीसी जाती हैं, और (3) एक सैन्य हथियार जो ऊँचे कोण पर गोले/शेल दागता है।
