इसका नाम यूनानी स्वप्न-देव 'मॉर्फियस' (Morpheus) से लिया गया; 19वीं सदी की शुरुआत में (जर्मन Morphium) शब्द प्रचलित हुआ, जो लैटिन Morpheus से आया।
Definition
Morphine is a powerful opioid analgesic used to relieve severe pain (for example after surgery, injury, or in advanced illness); it acts on opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord and can cause side effects such as drowsiness, constipation, respiratory depression, and dependence.
मॉर्फीन एक शक्तिशाली ओपिओइड दर्द-निवारक दवा है, जिसका उपयोग तीव्र/गंभीर दर्द (जैसे सर्जरी, चोट, या उन्नत बीमारी में) कम करने के लिए किया जाता है; यह मस्तिष्क और मेरुरज्जु के ओपिओइड रिसेप्टर्स पर असर करती है और उनींदापन, कब्ज़, श्वास-दमन तथा लत/निर्भरता जैसे दुष्प्रभाव पैदा कर सकती है।
