From an Algonquian language (via earlier colonial spellings such as forms resembling 'mockasin'), adopted into English to refer to the traditional Native North American shoe.

Definition
A moccasin is (1) a traditional Native North American soft-leather shoe, often without a separate sole or heel; (2) a modern shoe modeled on that style, typically with stitching around the top edge; (3) a light beige color like the leather of such shoes; and (4) a common name for certain North American snakes such as the cottonmouth (water moccasin) and copperhead.
