From German Mercaptan (19th century), coined from Latin mercurius ‘mercury’ + captans ‘seizing/catching’, referring to thiols forming strong complexes with mercury.

Definition
A mercaptan is an organosulfur compound, most commonly a thiol (R–SH), known for its very strong smell; small amounts are added to otherwise odorless fuels (like natural gas) to help detect leaks.
