From Latin Mediterraneus (“in the middle of land”), from medius (“middle”) + terra (“land”); later used for the sea between Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Mediterranean describes things connected with the Mediterranean Sea and the countries around it (southern Europe, North Africa, and western Asia), including their climate, food, culture, and geography. It can also name the region itself.
