Origin & History

From Latin medianus “of the middle,” from medius “middle”; first used in English for ‘middle’ and later in statistics for the middle value of ordered data.

Definition

In statistics, the median is the middle number when data are arranged in order; if there are two middle numbers, the median is their average. In other contexts, median can mean a central dividing line/strip, such as the median of a road.

सांख्यिकी में, डेटा को क्रम में रखने पर जो बीच का मान आता है उसे median कहते हैं; यदि बीच में दो मान हों तो उनका औसत median होता है। अन्य संदर्भों में median का अर्थ किसी चीज़ को दो भागों में बाँटने वाली केंद्रीय रेखा/पट्टी भी हो सकता है, जैसे सड़क का डिवाइडर।
